Greek Flag accepts GL's Extended Dry Docking Programme
flag-greekThe Greek Ministry has accepted Germanischer Lloyd's (GL) extended dry docking (EDD) programme. GL offers owners and operators the chance to extend the dry-docking period from five to seven-and-a-half-years. GL is the first Classification Society to obtain the Greek flag State's acceptance for extended dry-docking. Extended dry-docking is applicable from now on, to container vessels , general cargo vessels and multipurpose vessels flying the Greek flag and classed with GL. The programme is available for the above named type of ships up to ten years old , and must be completed by the age of fifteen years.

GL Extended Dry Docking

gl_logoMaximum scheduling flexibility through Extended Dry Docking (EDD)
A new Extended Dry Docking (EDD) option for container vessel, general cargo ships and multi-purpose dry cargo vessels has been introduced by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to acknowledge longer lasting coatings.
GL offers owners and operators the chance to extend the dry-docking period from five to seven-and-a-half-years. This option provides maximum scheduling flexibility while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. Owners who previously would have had to look for an available dry-docking facility each five years can now have their ship inspected at dock-side.

Somali pirates seize another ship in "safe" corridor one day after the return ...
pirates2For the second time within a week Somali pirates have hijacked a ship sailing in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor through the Gulf of Aden.
EU NAVOR says that during the afternoon of Aug 5, 2010, the MV SYRIA STAR reported that she was under attack from pirates who had climbed onboard and fired shots at the crew. Helicopters were immediately dispatched to the vessel and tried to establish communications with the SYRIA STAR, which had stopped in the water.

INTERTANKO slams decision to release Bow Saga attackers
piratesINTERTANKO today called a decision to release seven pirates back to Somalia "a bitter blow to the shipping industry (and to its seafarers) in the global fight against piracy."
The seven had been detained yesterday after an attack on the 40,085 dwt Norwegian-flag chemical tanker Bow Saga in the Gulf of Aden Internationally Recognized Transit Corridor.

Inmarsat agrees $1bn VSAT satellite contract
digitalshipInmarsat has made what may be the biggest technological revolution in its 30 year history after agreeing a landmark $1 billion order for three VSAT satellites, to be constructed by the Boeing Group.

Inmarsat and Boeing have confirmed the deal for the three Ka-band spacecraft, which will be added to Inmarsat's current L-band mobile satellite services fleet. Financial details were not disclosed.

MV SUEZ hijacked in the Gulf of Aden
mv-suezIn the early hours of 2 August, the MV SUEZ reported being under small arms fire from a pirate attack and minutes later she reported pirates on board. After notification of the attack, attempts were made to make contact with the MV SUEZ but to no avail. MV SUEZ was travelling in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) when attacked. Immediately after the first report a helicopter was directed to the ship but pirates had already taken over the command of the vessel.

Drydocks World Builds Second 3-D Seismic Vessel
drydock-wordsDrydocks World – Dubai has built the seismic vessel NB65 for its client WesternGeco. A naming ceremony for the vessel, now called ‘WG Cook’ was held at the Dubai yard on July 1, 2010.
The ultra modern high capacity 12-streamer 3-D seismic vessel is the second built at the yard for WesternGeco, a business segment of Schlumberger and one of the world's leading geophysical services company.

VLCC ‘M Star explosion is an attack or collision?
colission1Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) started to inspect the damaged VLCC ‘M Star’ last Thursday, while the vessel was at anchor off Fujairah.

The vessel suffered an explosion while outbound near the Strait of Hormuz, early last Wednesday.

Masahiko Hibino, the company’s tanker safety head, told Bloomberg in Tokyo that the vessel was anchored off Fujairah.

He declined to comment on the cause of the blast on board the VLCC, which was initially thought to be as a result on an ‘attack’.
